And NASCAR tried to sanitize it.


I guess NASCAR didn't think a bunch of good old boys, acting like good old boys was attractive to the hip, suburban/urban viewer they were trying to attract.
Along with main stream advertisers.

What originally cemented NASCAR in the public's imagination was, I believe the first, if not one of the first , Daytona 500 televised by CBS. The one that featured a fist fight on the far back stretch by Cale Yarborough and another driver.
