I understand the debate was about UConn vs. UMD.
Keep in mind that UMD was an original member so exceptions are made with original members that wouldn't be given to potential expansion members. As far as whether UMD was a massive loss or not, it isn't entirely clear to me (at least for football). At the time UMD football was going through some hard times. However, how much of the problems had to do with decisions Debbie Yow made and her attitude towards the football program? It is even possible that Kevin Anderson was forced to make some of the decisions he made as a result of decisions made by Debbie. Is it possible that NC State is currently experiencing those same obstacles which is making it more difficult for the program to rebuild?
If UMD ever found the right situation where the program could rebuild itself, then I do think it has a better chance to be a bigger player in the ACC than in the Big Ten. I think UMD's ability to regular play against a FL school would greatly help the school with recruiting from within the state. I do think UMD has a better chance of becoming another "Louisville" than UConn in the ACC. However, I don't see that happening in the Big Ten. I say that because the state of MD tends to have better HS and produce more quality recruits than the state of CT so UMD should be able to keep its fair share of instate recruits.
