Football history from when? Last 15 years.
I don't see much difference. Do you think Maryland has a better basketball history (men's and women's) than UConn? Maryland has a better football history more than 25 years old than UConn. But we're not living in the 80s.
I know UConn is in Storrs. Where do you think Virginia Tech is? Storrs is under 3 hours for a 20 million metro area in one direction, and it's under 2 hours from another 8 million metro area. UConn has a history of appearing at venues in both to capacity attendance. It's in a 3.5 million state with zero professional sport franchise competition. That's more attractive than being in a metro area with that competition.
MD has 300,000 alumni that raise about $10 million annually for athletics. UConn has 230,000 alumni that raise about $8.5 million annually for athletics. I really see little difference.
And yes Notre Dame joined the Big Ten in Ice Hockey. They have to join somewhere, and that's the closest available hockey conference to South Bend. They tried Hockey East, which is a better hockey conference than the Big Ten, but they absolutely hated the travel. Slogging around northern New England in the winter wasn't fun for their hockey team.
