UConn is virtually the same thing.
I understand why the B1G added the two that they added. They want to add eastern markets for their network and recruiting areas for their students. They are in a demographically challenged area like you represent West Virginia. At the 1:30 mark of this video link, Jim Delany shows that he's concerned about it. The additions of Maryland and Rutgers did little to achieve moving the B1G into the Sun Belt though. Sorry Jim!
The ACC is already in the Sun Belt. We benefit by selling our product to large population centers in the northeast with visibility there. And the Notre Dame addition put the ACC into sharing Chicago with the Big Ten as much as sharing Washington, D.C. The B1G didn't like that too much.
UConn further enhances presence in the NY to Boston corridor. UConn is ranked #60 in USN&WR academic rankings. Maryland is #60 in the same ranking. Rutgers is #70. UConn isn't AAU, but I don't think the ACC is as hung up on that association as much as the B1G.
We already have access to all the football recruiting regions we need. The UConn endowment is bigger than Maryland's. That's a true wash to me. For those upset about Louisville vs Maryland, UConn is about as close to the same thing as you can get to Maryland.
