All football and basketball games only require a student ID. UVA has done this for as long time as I can remember. Most other schools in the P5 require students to buy season tickets at a fee. Attached is the example of $252.00 for tickets at Ohio State for football. Ohio State charges $148.00 for student season basketball tickets.

UVA doesn't want to sell tickets to students. In addition to tickets, there are activity fees to cover intramurals, etc. It's how you account for the revenue (ticket sales vs student fees).
