Would the start-up cost be that significant given the men's club
team currently plays at the Civic Center? I don't think there is a women's club team, but I would think they could play at the Civic Center too until VT decides to build a new arena. I don't think Cassell can be cheaply renovated Cassell so ice hockey can play there too. Then again, I don't think VT could afford to have separate facilities for basketball and ice hockey (at least while the ice hockey programs are getting off the ground).
Given that ice hockey typically plays regular season games on the weekend, typically will play 2 games on back-to-back days, and VT has a basketball/ice hockey arena, then the ACC and VT may have to get creative with the scheduling to make sure the arena isn't overbooked. The easiest way for VT to build support for both programs in the beginning would probably be to schedule doubleheaders so fans can see both teams play on the same day. Heck VT may even want to continue with that traditional if/when it ever built an arena just for ice hockey.
