Timing of contract


ESPN signed the contract at the height of the rights run up when NBC and Fox both launched their sports networks. The feeling was that either one of them would make an aggressive bid to have one of the major sports properties.

Plus, the deal includes international broadcast rights, and that is where the NBA's audience growth is coming from.
