The Hokies announced Friday that they have hired Szefc, the baseball coach at Maryland since 2013, as the replacement for Pat Mason. They couldn't have done much better than this choice....

He conquered all those to guide the Terps to back-to-back Super Regional appearances in 2014-15 -- something I'd never thought I'd see as a former player on the school's bottom-feeding ACC teams in the late 1990s. The Terps gave host UVa a challenge in both of those appearances, with an aggressive offensive style and a solid blend of pitching and defense....

I've never met Szefc outside of the press conference setting of those Super Regionals in Charlottesville, but the drill sergeant vibe he gives off is easy to detect. He will fight for his players. He won't back down in recruiting. He'll bring an edge to the dugout.
