The University of Maryland athletic department was in the black in fiscal 2015 for the first time in years, according to financial documents provided by the university.

Conference revenue, received from participation in bowl games, tournaments and through television appearances, jumped from $19 million in 2014 to about $35.2 million in 2015. Ticket sales also increased, from $13.4 million in 2014 to $16 million in 2015, a 19 percent surge.

That in turn caused overall revenue to grow dramatically, from $73.4 million to about $92.7 million in 2015. Overall expenses, however, rose an almost equal amount, from $72.9 million to $92.5 million.

That jump in expenses includes about $7.6 million in debt service payments the athletic department makes for its facilities and buildings — work done on Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium, the adjoining Tyser Tower, Xfinity Center and an outdoor amphitheater.

An additional $6.25 million in debt payments were made to the University of Maryland for the ACC settlement and earlier payments by the university to cover department shortfalls. Team travel costs also increased, from $5.4 million in 2014 to $6.35 million.
