I agree with some of what you say in

Your post. But as a parent of a talented softball player in Virginia, who played about 7 years of travel softball till about 2 years ago, my main take away of travel ball is that it's first and foremost about the money. Nothing else takes precedence. Its interesting that you used the word "cringe" regarding HS softball in your original post, because there are alot of things that I cringe at regarding travel softball: time limits that determine the outcomes of games (a time limit should have nothing to do with a game of softball); coaches stalling and wasting time on purpose in order to manipulate the time limit in their favor; players playing several weekends in a row, which can lead to burnout and strain on the whole family; exorbitant costs (team fees, travel, etc.) involved for the player to play on a travel team. All of these are factors that a HS softball player does not have to contend with. Maybe one of the reasons that HS stats are listed is that HS softball has a community spirit involved, whereby the player and her skill level are more widely known on that level. I do agree with you that on the whole, the level of play in travel softball is noticeably greater than HS softball, but as a parent, I prefer HS softball.
