Four conference champions seems so natural, very neat and tidy. But I doubt that it happens. The TV network people and the conference financial wonks want a playoff that generates the most money possible. There could have been four champions in last year's playoff, but Penn State got bounced because eveyone knows that Ohio State is a big draw on TV and they travel well, really well. The committee won't relinquish their freedom to snub a weak-looking champion who might diminish the cash haul. If BC or Minnesota were a conference champion, the committee would look for a way to insert a popular 2nd place team (or Notre Dame). Some of the certainty on this board about "Four Champions" is wishful thinking in hope of forcing ND's hand. If the ACC can't acquire ND through simple attraction, maybe there's a message we're not quite getting. Hint: ND doesn't want to be in the ACC, or any other conference.
