Big12 was killed due to basic geography.

There just weren't any really good expansion candidates for them in their area. Had the BigEast butted up to Big12 territory, they would have pulled those schools. remember, they are still on average making more money from sports than ACC schools. Texas and Oklahoma make a ton more dough than FSU and Clemson. WVU makes more than VT, or about 10 other ACC schools.
