His first try at expansion, the one where Miami, BC, and Syracuse were to be selected, became a several week clown show, which I'm eternally grateful to Dr Casteen. And to Duke and UNC, since their continued no vote made Virginia's vote essentially a veto vote.

Even the rule that a Dog and Pony show had to preceed any formal invitation worked to the ACC's disadvantage, since something like that would be public knowledge in no time.

But Swofford's biggest problem is he called for a vote, but didn't know the vote results before hand. So the clown show continued for several weeks.

That was a far cry from the next expansion which basically happened before anyone knew about it, the selection of Pitt and Syracuse.
