Well, maybe it's like baseball with variations on a single pitch.

e.g. Catcher calls a fastball and the pitcher can throw it 4 seam, 2 seam, with some sink etc... You can throw multiple types of change-ups as well.
Someone else will have to chip in on the softball variant.
