It wasn't really a conference back then

It was more like the ECAC.

Teams played about 10 games total back then, and they scheduled anywhere from 3-7 "conference" games.

The ACC and SEC kept this flexible schedule into the 70's. ACC teams scheduled anywhere from 5-7 games before USCe left the conference, and the SEC teams scheduled anywhere from 5-7 games until 1977 when they went to an 8 game schedule.

The ACC went to a 7 game schedule after USC left.
