I think it is semantics since the ECAC has 243 members from all

3 division levels and yet still calls itself a conference. However, it functions more like a confederation because the members are divided up based on division levels and in some cases subdivided again based on region. For some sports the ECAC may even subdivide a third time. Even though the SoCon had 16-20 members in its early days and all the members participated in the same division level, it isn't clear how the SoCon established the conference scheduling in those days. Did the members play only certain schools every year (i.e. divisions or pods) with the possibility of playing the other members in a conference tournament? Did the conference arrange the schedule so a team would play every other member within a certain time period (aka cycle)?
