Well there is a lot of uncertainty on where college athletics will
evolve to in the future. I am talking about 30+ years from now. Take all the recent changes we have seen in big time college athletics. If someone had suggested any of these changes during the 1970s or even early/mid-1980s, then would people think that individual was off his/her rocker or think it could never happen?
Most people think that it is unlikely big time college athletics will ever become a true professional league or that federal/state government(s) will stick their noses into the matter. If Congress passed the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 and the various Title laws which have all impacted colleges and the Supreme Court ruled in 1983 in favor of the schools in NCAA v. Oklahoma (and Georgia), then there is always a possibility for future laws and rulings.
So it is possible in 30+ years big time college athletics as we know it today is now a professional league. Maybe even merging with the various existing professional leagues. Future collegiate athletic could return to "club" status or at least all schools operate as the current DIII schools and don't offer athletic scholarships. If there are multiple division levels, then they could be formed based on the size of the school (like what is done with HS athletics).
