Big East accounts for several colossal errors on its own

In (somewhat) chronological order:

1. Rejection of Penn State for membership in 1982. Maybe the single biggest, from a BE perspective. It's impossible to tell just how different the current landscape would be if they hadn't whiffed on this one, but the magnitude would have to be huge.

2. Addition of football. Net effect was basically to provide a springboard for 7/8 of the football schools (including four charter members of the BE) to the current P5 level with few (if any) negative consequences associated with leaving the BE behind. Also created further irreparable damage to the internal structure of the conference.

3. "Expansion" of 1994. In calling the football schools' bluff, the basketball schools also laid bare the relative weakness of the BE compared to other conferences. Also eliminated any illusions of loyalty or political compromise that may have existed.

4. 1995 addition of Notre Dame. Helped create the "every man for himself" mentality that ultimately led to the cherry picking of the football schools by other conferences.

5. 2005 Realignment. Addition of CUSA schools to replenish the numbers of the football conference did little more than cement the BE's status as an "also ran" in that sport. The Catholic 7 probably would have been better off pulling the plug at this point than they were in 2012.

Consider that my own personal Big East Top 5. Tell me what I'm missing.
