I am not sure if Tranghese deserves the blame or not for the Big East


not seizing the opportunity to add Penn State as a member prior to the Nittany Lions joining the Big Ten. The Big East (or whatever conference name you want to use here) had the opportunity to create an eastern power conference out of the eastern Independent schools. If this new conference included the following: BC, Syracuse, Rutgers, Penn State, Pitt, WVU, VT, ECU (instead of Temple), Miami; then would FSU have found that conference appealing? What about Notre Dame? If the conference was going to be a full membership conference and needed to add a couple more members to get to 12, then it could add 2-3 football schools that had quality basketball programs (i.e. Cincy, L'ville, and Temple).

If the Big East (or whatever new conference) had played its cards right, then it could have blocked the ACC from expanding north, the Big Ten from expanding east, and even prevent the Big XII from adding an eastern island.
