I am only familiar with ODU's women's program during the 1980s
and early 1990s since I was attending JMU basketball games while growing up during that time. I forget which announcer coined the phrase "African connection" for ODU. However, I believe it came about because ODU (under Marianne Crawford Stanley and/or Wendy Larry) was the first (or one of the first) women's program to recruit somewhat heavily from Africa. Maybe even internationally since ODU always seemed to have multiple women from an African nation on its roster every year.
