Maybe, but USC didn't leave because of basketball.


It was all Paul Dietzel and a number of football players he wanted to recruit that did not qualify to play in the ACC. The ACC had higher academic standards than the NCAA at the time. The ACC would not accommodate Paul Dietzel, so he got the USC administration to leave the conference. He tried to get Clemson to leave too, but Clemson chose not to.

Paul Dietzel when asked about it for 30 years after that always said USC didn't have a choice because the best football recruits in South Carolina High Schools could not qualify for the ACC. Paul Dietzel went on to watch Clemson win a football national championship in 1981 ten years after USC left.
