Hang up their cleats? I guess someone forgot to tell the football

team that the program was disbanded.

FWIW the football program continued after the school left the SEC. Although they might have missed a season or two because of WWII. Eventually the school's athletic programs ended up in DIII. I am not sure if Sewanee was one of the inaugural DIII schools when the NCAA created the divisional level in 1973 or they joined at a later date. Regardless Sewanee is a DIII school now, but I think there was talk a few years ago about possibly switching to NAIA which is comprised (I think exclusively) of small private schools.
