My condolences. I read an interesting article last week

I can't find it, unfortunately -- I think it was in the Washington Post, but not 100% sure. Essentially the writer (a doctor) said that at some point a doctor simply needs to ask the patient what he or she is looking for in their care. For many -- like your MIL, it appears -- it's just to be comfortable. No more tests, no more drugs, no more invasive practices.

The example in question was an elderly man who had all sorts of issues that his previous doctor was trying to address. The author asked him "What are you looking for from me," and the patient told him, "I just want to stop falling. Falling sucks. I can deal with all this other stuff if I could just stop falling." So the doctor worked with him and his at-home care on a little PT and some other means to get him to stop falling.

If your wife is able, she might want to ask her mother the same question, especially when it comes to further care: what is it you WANT? Too often we think that people want a cure, when often they just want dignity, respect, or just peace.
