Player Efficiency Ratings for our 2016-2017 Hokies

Thought I’d try to figure out everybody’s Player Efficiency Rating (PER). Look it up on Wikipedia if you’re interested in what it is, they’ll show you the complicated formula, too. I couldn’t find a site that does the calculations for you. Luckily, I found where Bleacher Report broke the formula down so I went with their formula (linked below). Here is the Bleacher Report formula:

[ FGM x 85.910
+ Steals x 53.897
+ 3PTM x 51.757
+ FTM x 46.845
+ Blocks x 39.190
+ Offensive_Reb x 39.190
+ Assists x 34.677
+ Defensive_Reb x 14.707
- Foul x 17.174
- FT_Miss x 20.091
- FG_Miss x 39.190
- TO x 53.897 ]
x (1 / Minutes)

This is what I came up with:

LeDay 22.03
Clarke 19.14
Allen 15.14
Sy 12.90
Outlaw 12.82
Robinson 11.85
Hill 11.24
Bibbs 8.57

Low minute guys:
Hamilton 31.03
Galloway -5.38
Donlon -39.19

Hamilton was very productive in his 21 minutes this year – haha. And poor Greg Donlon, his only stat was one missed FG in one minute of action – just totally killed his PER – haha.

For comparison sake, Michael Jordan had a PER of 27.91 for his entire NBA career, the best ever. Also, average is considered 15.00, anything above 22.5 is considered a definite all-star. That’s all pretty rough comparison stuff though because the NBA plays more minutes, the super complicated formula accounts for pace of play, etc.

Anyway, it was no surprise to me that LeDay had the highest PER on the team. Notice we lose our #1 and #3 PER guys.

I wasn’t surprised to see Hill near the bottom – not sure what happened to him toward the end of the season, but I was surprised to see Bibbs at the very bottom. One negative of the PER is that it doesn’t/can’t look at just solid defense – it only looks at steals and blocks from a defensive standpoint. Well, rebounds, too, I guess.
