Years ago, the D1 NCAA tmt. used to have 31 qualified wrestlers, and the D2 and D3 Champions would be given an invite, thus making 33 wrestlers. The D3 Champion always wrestled the number 1 seed as a pigtail.

They no longer invite the D2/D3 Champion, but have left the 33 man bracket format in place. What is different now - the pigtail bracket is a random draw.
