Since the Big East is no longer a power conference in football
then I am not sure the Big East retained its power conference status in basketball. Someone could easily make the case that the AAC and Big East are now considered "mid-majors" because they are a non-power conference now. As the gap continues to widen, then it will become easier for the power conferences to break away to form their own division level. It is possible that the power conferences may temporarily expand beyond 16 members to make it easier politically. What will be interesting to see play out is whether the power conference break up into smaller conferences once they complete the separation.
