The reason the NCAA added a play-in game is because


the MWC earn an automatic bid in 1999 or 2000 when the 8 schools left the WAC. The Committee didn't want to take away an at-large bid to give to the MWC when it earned an automatic bid. So the Committee decided to expand the field to 65 and add a play-in game. Right now there are 32 automatic bids and 36 at-large bids.
