It's not so much that our OOC SOS is "bad"...
It's that our OOC SOS is the worst. Literally, if you look down that list there are a few teams whose "NC SOS" number stands out:
UCLA - 287
Wisconsin - 288
Virginia Tech - 300
Not only are we not in the same "class" as those other teams, we have the worst number.
I've had this theory for some years now. Each year the committee sends a message: "Play a challenging schedule."
So, the committee gives the team with the best SOS a little extra bump. This means that a bubble team with the "best SOS" title might sneak into the tournament. It might mean that a good team with the "best" schedule gets a slightly better seed.
Likewise, the team with the "worst" schedule is going to get dinged. Guess who has the inside track for the Booby Prize this year?
Now, don't get me started on the fact that even though the committee tries to downplay the significance of team's RPI ranking, all of this is based on the RPI (thus all the scare quotes above).
