Some discussion inside...

The format of the National Duals isn't really a tournament. It's more like the ACC-Big 10 challenge in basketball, except it's B1G vs. the World. The Big 10 is by far the most dominant college wrestling conference, and they are putting up 9 of their teams against the top 9 non-B1G teams. (Ranked Pac 12 teams like Arizona State and Stanford won't be participating.) Last year, all the B1G schools hosted; this year, it's all the non-B1G schools. We're the #2 non-Big Ten team, and will host the (approximately) #2 Big Ten 10 team. Iowa may be that team, but they have bad blood with Virginia Tech and apparently don't want to come to B'burg. So it's probably Ohio State.

The National Duals did have a true tournament format a few years ago with 12-16 teams competing over a weekend. We had a great run one year during our rise to national prominence, where we made it to the championship (but lost to Cornell, who was like #2 nationally).

The ACC and NCAA tournaments are double-elimination tournaments in each of the 10 weights (125 to 285), with placement matches to determine a Top 4 (ACC) or Top 8 (NCAA). The Top 8 in the NCAAs are honored as All American. Individual wrestlers score points for placement in the top 4/8, advancement, and for bonus point victories (major decision, technical fall, fall). Team scores are just the sum of the individual wrestlers' scores. I'm including a link to an article describing scoring.

Automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament are at stake for individual wrestlers in the ACC tournament. The top ~28 wrestlers at each weight earn automatic bids for their conferences. If you have 3 automatic qualifiers, the top 3 guys in the 6-team ACC tournament get bids to the NCAA. (Those are often, but not always, the guys that earned them.) After all the conference tournaments, the NCAA hands out a few at-large bids for top guys who didn't qualify in their tournaments.

The ACC tournament is likely to come down to us and NCSU. We're probably favored, but it will probably be close. We'll probably have the #1 seeds at 125, 149, 157, 174, and 197. Zavatsky at 184 and Walz at 285 both have strong seasons (only 2 losses each), but each lost to an ACC opponent and will probably be #2. I have no clue what the seeding will look like at 133. We'll probably have the #6 seed at 141 and #5 at 165. If we wrestle to seed, we'll probably win without many points at 133/141/165, but it would be close. We under-performed last year and NCSU beat us.

The NCAA tournament scoring is pretty different because there's so much more competition. We will almost certainly crush NCSU scoring-wise there. We have six top-10 guys, and Sal seems to be coming on strong lately. You end up with a bunch of points as an All-American, as we saw in our #4 finish last year. NCSU has a lot of guys in the #10-to-20 range, but finishing 15th doesn't score you many points. (Kevin Jack is the exception -- #2 at 141.) One All-American is probably worth 5 or more #15 guys, scoring-wise, and we have a good shot at having 6 of them.
