If it moves the RPI enough
But by the time the tournaments roll around, most of the decisions are made. Then it's just a matter of rolling the last teams in back out as upsets happen in conference tournament championships. Every year, it seems like some team that needed a roll in the conference tournament gets that roll and still ends up out of the NCAAs or a team that can't afford a day one loss gets clobbered in that first game and still winds up in the big dance.
Again, I'm not sure why they don't consider the tournaments more. But they really don't. The RPI is the largest contributor but unless you win the tournament, you will inevitably add a loss to the ole resume which usually balances out at least the first win.
