I believe there was some talk of the possibility that Penn State

may decide to leave the Big Ten just prior to the conference adding UMD and Rutgers. If the ACC had added Rutgers instead of BC, then would the Big Ten still have interest in expanding eastward in order to keep Penn State? With Rutgers and potentially WVU off the table, it seems like the only options for the Big Ten to expand eastward would have been Marshall, Temple, Navy, Army, Buffalo, BC, UMass, Toronto, and UConn. I am not sure any of those options would have been appealing enough to entice Penn State to stay and justify adding UMD. Plus, it may have placed the Big Ten in the position to only add 1 east school and 1 west school. I am not sure if the Big Ten finds any of the west schools (i.e. Colorado St, Kansas, Kansas St, Iowa St, Wyoming, etc) appealing enough to add at that time.

If for some reason the Big Ten allowed Penn State to leave for the ACC, then would UMD still have been as interested in joining the Big Ten? Would the Big Ten be willing to add an island (UMD) to the conference?
