If you look at the SEC's recent history, then one could say

it is a conference willing to take risks. You might even say it has the luxury of adding members that don't necessarily move the needle. The SEC had the foresight to be the first conference to expand to 12 members so it could host a conference championship game in football. However, a case could be made that Arkansas, South Carolina, and Mizzou are schools that don't exactly move the needle and didn't exactly move the needle when the SEC decided to add them. So to assume that future SEC will be solely driven by needle movement may not be correct.

Right now the ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC might be circling waiting for the first domino to drop to signal the end of the Big XII. Once that first domino falls then it isn't unreasonable to think it could quickly (relatively speaking) turn into a feeding frenzy. Right now it is unclear whether the other power conferences will consume the Big XII before forming their own division level/association or vice versa. Regardless DI has been heading down a path where the gulf between the power conferences and mid-major conferences is growing wider and wider every year. You might even say this path is leading to an inevitable conclusion that DI will see another major re-organization similar to what it saw in football in 1978.
