Are those options available elsewhere? Perhaps

someplace where one might not be reminded daily about past unpleasantness?

The retirement option is strictly up to the individual, but from what I can gather, the poster only chose the condo route in Blacksburg based on the desire to support the Hokies. He made a choice to plan his retirement and his giving to coincide with and support his retirement.
