I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but I find it interesting that you


punish the batter if a fielder makes a physical mistake (E = 0 H, 1 AB), but "you can't punish a batter for a mental mistake by a fielder."

However, while debating myself, I realized that perhaps it's fair to call it a hit since the batter took advantage of the situation by putting the ball where the pitcher would be more worried about stopping the guy at second.

In which case, I'd argue it wasn't a mental mistake, but the fielder's choice; but not ruled a fielder's choice because the fielder didn't choose who would be out.
