Spoke to official scorer for Washington Nationals re: the scoring debate


His answer:

HIT

He said you score it similar to if a pitcher looks a runner at second back on a ground ball and then throws over to first late -- also a hit. Or if he goes to throw to third, realizes that he won't get the guy, and turns and tries for first but is too late. You can't punish a batter for a mental mistake by a fielder.
