No, a fielder's choice doesn't have to be a force play. Think about the


same scenario but the lead runner gets thrown out (tagged) trying to advance to 3rd. That's obviously a fielder's choice out that wasn't a force and the hitter certainly gets no credit for a hit, i.e. a batting average ding.
