Marketing will be the key.
In the absence of competition from professional sports franchises, we have seen the local college team fill the vacuum for the sports entertainment dollar. Louisville is a great example. With the absence of the NFL and NBA in San Diego now, perhaps SDSU can thrive if they play their cards right.
UConn doesn't have professional franchise competition in its state, so it has the ability to fill the vacuum as well. It will be interesting to see if Randy Edsall can get them back to where they were. West Virginia is the same way albeit a smaller population.
Other city Universities in the ACC footprint I'm keeping an eye on because of the size of their markets are Temple and South Florida. Cincinnati too, but they are down the list.
