What J29 meant was...

17 matches gives you an RPI ranking. RPI is one of three components to get to the NCAAs -- Coaches Rank, RPI, and Win %.

If you have ALL three you are "Gold", literally and figuratively. And you WILL get one of 4 At Large bids even if you crap the bed in your conference tournament or fail to show due to illness, you oversleep, or whatever.

If you do not wrestle the requisite 17 matches to get an RPI, then you can still get "Silver" status by being ranked in the Coaches and have a good winning %. In this case, you need to place equal to or better than the number of auto bids your conference gets (and in an endless "do" loop the number of autobids given to a conference's weight class is based on the number of Top 33 wrestlers it has).

An outside looking in wrestler can get to the NCAAs by placing high enough to get a conference auto-bid OR awarded an at large bid based on Silver or even high-Bronze status. [This would be McFaddens route to NCAAs without 17 matches in a dreamer's world.]

In an ideal world, ALL Top 29 wrestle to their respective conference seeds AND all 8 conferences are represented. This would leave 4 at large bids to go to best "body of work" wrestlers left over. However, say for example, Joey Dance gets the flu and is hospitalized during the ACC trny or is is upset 2x and somehow gets dumped in the tournament without placing...he would most definitely get an at large forgiveness break because he is Gold. That would mean a lucky ACC outlier would get one of the ACC auto bids, leaving just 3 at larges up for grabs.

I hope I got all that right...it is a convoluted system. Clear as mud, right?
