UNI Preview

I must apologize as work has eaten up my free time for a true TSL article. I'll default to my old wall of text post for tonite. General feeling, UNI is an upward trending team, and one of these times the hokies are gonna get caught. This year should be ok provided the hokies show up.

#6 VT at #22 UNI
125: VT #3 Joey Dance vs. UNI #2 Dylan Peters OR Jay Schwarm
This is the big question mark return for UNI, is Peters ready to go. It was the trendy pick to knock Joey down to #3 because ... ratings i guess. Dance has shown that he can and does beat a healthy Peters and theres no reason to think that should change here. If Peters goes, its Dance by a decision, if Schwarm goes Dance might run it out to a major (Schwarm scores majors so im inclined to think itll be hard to open a gap). I still think Peters comes back and that gym gets pretty wild. Good test for dance.
VT 3 UNI 0
133: VT Dom Latona vs. UNI Josh Alber
Alber should probably be flirting with a top 20 ranking and this is a poor matchup for the hokies. I expect latona can keep it close in the neutral position after watching him live last weekend, but he has a long way to go on both top and bottom. His ride last weekend was essentially "Hold on for dear life". Unfortunately I'm thinking UNI Major here.
UNI 4 - VT 3
141: VT Dennis Gustafson vs. UNI Jake Hodges OR Jake Koethe
The fact that these wrestlers are down at 141 should demonstrate how much talent thomsen has. Either wrestler would be flirting with a top 20 ranking up at 149, and instead both are shedding pounds to try to start. This is a really really good measuring stick for Gus, cause i think if he has a hurdle to clear its the brutes at 141. Both guys should have a size advantage,, so we'll see how dennis compensates. I'd call this dual 50/50 right now, and since I'm a VT Homer, Gus by decision
VT 6 UNI 4
149: VT Solomon Chishko vs. UNI Max Thomsen
Thomsen was the true prize of the monster UNI recruiting class 2 years ago and how starts as a RS FR for the panthers. He was an Iowa 4xer and most blue blood programs across the country would have taken him in a heartbeat. Should be a great test for both wrestlers, Sully with some stiffer competition and Thomsen as a "welcome to the big leagues" moment. I expect Sully in this one with a tight 1-2 pt decision
VT 9 - UNI 4
157 VT Sal Mastriani OR Ryan Blees vs. UNI Paden Moore OR Bryce Steiert
Just when write that Sal has the spot locked, VT submits Blees as a potential starter. No idea if that simply means Dresser wants him weighed in for 165 or what. Regardless, Sal should be the starter here, And a win probably has hi pushing for a ranking (maybe I'mm getting ahead of myself). I expect to see Steiert, after he qualified as a freshman last year, but throughout his lineup Doug Schwab has some juggling to do with redshirts. If we start at 125, the dual is still too close for Dresser to start experimenting (especially if he wants to sit McFadden). Expect Mastriani By decision.
VT 12 - UNI 4
165: VT David McFadden OR Mike Ciavarro vs. UNI Isaiah Patton
So the cats out of the bag, McFadden is travelling and weighing in. Doesnt mean he'll wrestle but Dresser wouldnt bring him unless he was in shape sooo.... who knows. Hopefully with VT up 12-4 based on my prediction, Ciavarro goes. However if Dresser has already made up his mind that McFadden will wrestle again this year, it would be nice to have a break-in match before Daniel Lewis. McFadden's better than Patton, not sure Ciavarro is though. I'll guess Ciavarro goes and VT drops a decision here
VT 12 - UNI 7
174: VT Zach Epperly vs. UNI Taylor Lujan
Lujan was a stud out of georgia and with the amount of camps we do' i would be surprised if the two havent rolled together before (though no inside knowledge). This one should be an epperly win, but i think the freshman keeps its waaay to close for comfort, VT by decision.
VT 15 - UNI 7
184: VT Zack Zavatsky vs. UNI Drew Foster OR Jacob Holschlag
Foster is a really good wrestler whos been down to 174 and up at 197, but clearly is most comfortable at 184. ZZ should win but this will be a closer one.
VT 18 - UNI 7
197: VT Jared Haught vs. UNI Jared Bartel
I'm gonna be so pissed if Jared Haught doesnt shoot early and often here. He should steamroll Bartel. I'll say MD, are you sensing a trend in our upperweights yet?
VT 22 - UNI 7
285: VT Ty Walz vs. UNI JJ Everard
Everard is a grizzled old senior like walz, and has previously qualified for the tourney at SDSU. Expect this to be close but after watching walz respond against better competition in Johnson last weekend, im not sweating this one. Walz by decision.
VT 25 - UNI 7
Looking Back VT has a ton of close matches in this one, and UNI is probably a year or two away from really being a stiff challenge. Matches to watch are 125 if peters goes, 141 and the headliner 149.
