Thoughts after the Scrimmage
Not an expert, but here are my impressions:
1) Our top talent – all the returning AAs plus Zavatsky – are tough as hell. The high scores (lots of TFs) they put up against some very good back-ups (many of whom could start at other schools) show the large gap between the No. 1s and No. 2s at each weight. And they need to be that good to beat the guys being rolled out by Penn State, OSU, tOSU, Iowa, Missouri, etc.
2) Mastriani sent a huge message that he’s not done as a starter despite Chisko moving up to 149. He did not have a good season in 2015-16, but he looks tougher than ever now.
3) Despite comment No. 2, I think 157 and 165 will remain an ongoing competition for a while. Expect Blees, LaPrade, Mastriani, Bergida and Mike Ciavarro to continue pushing each other for those spots.
4) 133 remains a mystery. I’m skeptical that true freshman, Latona, has that spot despite winning on Saturday. There are a lot of guys in the room now – unlike last year – at 125, 133 and 141 who could move up or down to challenge for that weight, and several of them were bigger names on the recruiting front.
5) And finally, the coaches have a lot of time and matches coming up to figure this out. We can beat Edinboro and VMI even if we lose at 165 or 133. So between those matches and the Open on Sunday, the coaches still have a lot of time and real wrestling to watch before making final decisions.
