One quote from the article summed the BigXII up perfectly
"The Big 12 was formed as a business enterprise. A virtual member of the Big Eight and the strong members of the Southwest Conference. It didn't form from culture or academics or like-mindedness. It was all about money."
For all of its faults, the ACC was formed because of a like-mindedness of the schools. GT was invited in the late 70's because it was an institution like the other 7. FSU in the early 90's was brought in for football reasons, but FSU was also wanting to upgrade their academic reputation. Then the additions of VT, BC, MIA, SU and Pitt were all likeminded schools academically and athletically. Louisville is the only one that was brought in for athletic reasons only, but being a blueblood basketball school, it probably made it an easier pill for UNC and Duke to swallow.
