Tough spot for Cal, but it is going to have to cut sports


Upgrading the football stadium was unavoidable. The stadium is built directly over a fault, is rather old and supposedly is a beautiful facility. And the cost of building a new stadium in California would be even more prohibitive than the $400 million upgrade.

Cal's problem is that it has 30 varsity sports; far more than any Pac 12 school other than Stanford (which is financially loaded). With cost-of-attendance added to an already large expense, and with the Pac 12 network not panning out, I don't think Cal has much choice but to slash sports.
