I suggested P5 associate memberships some time ago

Partial members, partially money. Helps ensure conference survival, provides 2nd tier schools with just enough money to survive and be partially competitive but not good enough to present much of a real threat, makes 2nd tier fan bases happy when they delusionally think they're finally 1st tier programs, and provides the elite programs with enough patsie opponents to ensure they will compete for the playoffs.

It's a win-win...for awhile.
