That could be said for 80% of the P-5 schools.

Nebraska won football national championships with a lot of disadvantages (geography, population,....) but still was one of the top football programs from the 1960's through the early 2000's. Tom Osborne had a lot to do with that. Nebraska hasn't had consistent head coaching success since then, but still did okay, but not to their high standards.

If Nebraska gets a quality head coach like Jim Harbaugh or Urban Meyer, they can challenge again for national titles. The Big 12 (when they had 12 members) wasn't much different than the present day Big 10. The Big 12 had Texas and Oklahoma and few others. The Big 10 has Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and a few others. Both conferences have a few weak football programs, but so does the ACC and Pac 12.

IMHO, Nebraska has history, tradition, and a good football foundation on their side. If Nebraska has no hope, neither does Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Iowa, Washington, Oregon, Arkansas, and 40 to 50 other P-5 programs. If Clemson and Oregon can get to the championship game, so can schools like Nebraska and Virginia Tech.
