They were ranked #168 in this year's USN&WR top national universities. They actually were ranked higher at #161 in 2014. Virginia Tech's academic ranking hasn't risen that much since joining the ACC. We've been stuck between 65-75 for some time. I've noticed UConn and Clemson getting ranked higher the past decade. Syracuse and Pitt seem to have dropped a few spots since joining the ACC. I honestly believe that academic rankings depend more on the school's academic programs and perception than what conference they play sports in. The Ivy League schools were already top notch academic institutions way before they formed the Ivy League. Vanderbilt has been strong academically despite their long affiliation with the SEC.

Louisville may improve their academic standing, but I don't see them moving up 5 or 10 spots every year just because they're in the ACC. IMHO, it would be impressive to see Louisville jump from #168 to 140 in the next decade. There are many good schools trying to improve their academic ranking, but I've noticed that the fix is in and it's very difficult to move up quickly. It appears that most schools stay ranked in the same area (plus or minus 5 spots) every year. Virginia Tech and UVA both seem to have their place in the rankings. Louisville's best chance to enhance their academic reputation would be to focus more on research. Virginia Tech has greatly improved its research ranking over the past decade. Not that long ago, Tech wanted to be in the top50, now they are aiming for the top 25. Louisville's research ranking is actually very respectable.
