What the BIG really wanted was eastern partners to appease PSU


It has been no secret that Penn State has wanted one or more eastern partners for years and years. Rutgers, Pitt and Syracuse were cited at various times during JoePa's time.

I continue to believe that the ACC's entire strategy of acquiring eastern schools of otherwise marginal value -- i.e., BC, Syracuse and Pitt -- was part of a failed, grand plan to lure in Penn State and Notre Dame. I think the B1G's play to get Maryland and Rutgers was designed to nip that strategy in the bud while investing in good television markets where other B1G schools already had a strong alumni presence.

The B1G may not be thrilled with the train wreck that is Rutgers athletics, but the future of that overall program can only go up. And Maryland holds its own with the middle of any P5 conference, even if it doesn't have a high ceiling in football.
