What's this?

It's kinda like refusing to get a cell phone. It's not that

everyone is doing it, it's that everyone is LOVING it. I have a friend who refuses to own a cell phone. It's absurd really because he gets to say he doesn't have a cell phone and wears this proudly as some sort of retro elitist ideal. Meanwhile his wife is reading texts I send to her to give to him and he then tells her what to text me back!!!! Reminds me a lot of ND right now.

ND doesn't have to join a conference but the things you list as valued are not exclusive to being independent. Alabama, OSU, Michigan, FL St, USC, etc seem to be doing just fine in a conference. Things change, ND has changed too. It is inevitable that you will join a conference. The only reason you are not is the money. Not tradition, not national status or any of the other reasons people state. This is about money and money alone. When ND makes less money either because they aren't paid as much or because the program can't generate revenue through success, then they will join a conference.
