You could set those anywhere, not just on the sidelines. In fact, higher
is better. Problem is they aren't super fast for the accuracy needed. And bad weather is a problem. And the ball shape. It would take two points to locate. One at each end, then generate the ball shape from that data.
It's probably just as quick to use the chains.
Plus all the instrument operators would rather be drinking.
