Rising tuition is a huge reason

I'll post this again but I think it's the reality of what we are dealing with.

I'm a Silver Hokie. What I see after reading the Tech pamphlet that went out is that the cost of college athletics has skyrocketed...up 60% in the last 5 years. What's the major contributor to that??? The increases in college tuition which requires funding from athletic scholarships. The Hokie Club has no control over that. VT is considered one of the most valuable degrees you can get as far as cost to benefit yet 1 year in state tuition is now at over $22,000. The escalating costs are something that need to be addressed but its not the Hokie Clubs fault. Granted the revenue generated from an ACC channel agreement would help immensely.

The other thing I took from it is that VT fans and the VT administration should be completely embarrassed by both the percent of alumni and and total dollars donated to this athletic program. We're considered one of the most passionate fan bases and university loyal alums in the country. Yet our donations rank 13th in the ACC?????? That's bad people. It really is. I'm not loaded...Federal worker with 2 kids and another on the way. Hell I live in NOVA and only get to about 2 games a year yet have season tickets. Do I get my money's worth by being a Silver Hokie? Nope.
I'm doing what I can because I love VT and want Tech to be great (at all sports not just football) and I know that others can do more and still others can do something to at least help (even if it means donating only $100).

The Hokie Club was put into a massive hole because of lack of foresight and poor communication by past leaders in growing is base. Obviously four years of mediocre football didn't help either. They are trying to fix it and its a little like ripping off a bandaid and exposing the wound. Do I think some of the big donors are getting screwed a bit? Yes. That said there are alot of hanger-ons that have gotten the benefit of awesome tickets that they shouldn't be able to get.

I think Chris put it best in an article. There is a cost associated to being great in college athletics...now more so than ever. The question is if you want VT to be great are you willing to pony up? Because that's the reality now people.
