At this point, Scot Thomas' job is safe because.
1. Whit Babcock has a few athletic programs in more need of a new head coach. Baseball and women's lacrosse are in more need of a change than softball. Even men's soccer is in need of new leadership.
2. Whit will see how Thomas does next season. Thomas has lead his team to 4 straight NCAA Tournaments. It looks very likely the streak ends this month unless the team wins the ACC Tournament.
3. Thomas has won about 60% of his games as Tech's only softball coach. A .600 record in MLB would make a baseball manager a Hall of Famer. In women's college softball, I'm guessing .750 or higher makes you a Hall of Famer. That's the decision Whit will ultimately have to make down the road. Does he want a FSU quality team or a team that makes the NCAA Tournament 3 to 4 times every 5 years.
4. This season's team is young. Our best players are freshmen. Losing Kelly Heinz hurt our pitching depth. Maggie also went through some tough times personally earlier in the season with her father being seriously ill. No doubt that our pitching depth hurt us this season. If our incoming freshmen don't rise to the occasion next season, we could be worse than this season. We are getting 2 quality pitchers in 2017-18 and one of the best players in the nation in 2017-18. Plus our freshmen will be juniors by then. The question is, will Whit tolerate another mediocre season without a NCAA Tourney bid? IMHO, Scot Thomas will have to beat in-state schools like JMU and Longwood The ACC has been down the past few years. We probably would've had a losing conference record this season if the ACC was better from top to bottom.
I agree with many of your concerns. I'd like to see more "small ball". I'd like to see us out recruit JMU in our own state. I think Scot needs to find a quality JUCO or graduate transfer pitcher by the fall or we could be in deep trouble next season. I just feel that Whit is okay with this season considering the youth and the lack of pitching depth. I don't know how he'll feel next season if things get worse. Is he happy with .600 softball with 3-4 trips to the NCAA's every 5 years or is he looking for .750+ record with annual Top 25 finishes with teams going deep into the NCAA Tourney?
